A/B Testing on X (Twitter)

Organic posts on X can't be split-tested the way a web page can, but you can still compare styles fairly. Two tools and a guide show you how.

The tools

  • Post A/B comparer: enter impressions and engagements for two posts, or two groups of posts, and see whether the difference in engagement rate is bigger than chance.
  • Variant planner: pick what to test (hook, media, length, call to action, link placement, format or timing), get the impressions and posts you need, and a balanced schedule.
  • How to A/B test posts on X: the method behind the tools, including what a comparison can and can't tell you.

Why bother testing posts?

Because gut feeling about what "did well" is skewed by the posts you remember. One viral post makes a format look brilliant; ten quiet ones get forgotten. Writing down impressions and engagements for matched pairs, then checking the totals, gives you a fairer read in a few weeks.

The same statistics power the website calculators, so if you also run tests on a store or landing page, the main toolkit works the same way.

Common questions

Does X have a built-in A/B test for organic posts?

Not for organic posts at the time of writing. Each post goes to whoever X's ranking chooses, so you compare posts rather than randomly split an audience. X Ads supports testing different creatives in paid campaigns.

Do these tools connect to my X account?

No. You type in numbers from X's post analytics. Nothing is fetched from or sent to X, and nothing you enter leaves your browser.

What is a good engagement rate on X?

It varies too much by account size, topic and format for a universal benchmark to mean much. Use your own median engagement rate over your last 20 to 30 posts as the baseline, and test against that.
